We are fortunate in this country to have a safe and abundant food supply. Our farmers work hard every day to provide a safe and nutritious product to the public. The milk you drink from the store was likely provided by a cow not too far from where you purchased it. But, many people are unaware of how milk is made and there are many misleading statements made about farming today. So what is the real MOOS about milk??

- Only 3% of the nations population farms so a small minority of people feed the rest of us.
- Milk is rich in vitamins and minerals. Three servings of dairy products are recommended every day. Low fat dairy has been shown to aid in weight loss programs for adults.
- An adult dairy cow can produce 8 to 12 gallons of milk a day. Our practice services farms that all combined produce about 40,000 gallons of milk a day!
- All milk is tested for antibiotics and adulterated substances. If a load tests positive, it is dumped. Therefore no milk you purchase in the store has antibiotics. We use antibiotics and medication to treat sick cows. There is a label on each bottle that tells the farmer how long he needs to discard that cows milk after treatment before the milk is safe to sell again.
- Many farmers use a product called POSILAC to increase productivity in their cows. This product is commonly known as bovine growth hormone (rBST). All cows have this substance in their body naturally which makes them make milk. Supplementing cows with this product is not bad and does not change the milk at all. In fact milk from cows that are supplemented with POSILAC is INDISTINGUISHABLE from cows that are not supplemented. In fact, there are more biologically active hormones in SOY MILK than COWS MILK. Farmers do many things to be more productive just like all businessmen such as feed good quality feed, prevent diseases in their cattle herd and take care of their cows.
- Cows given POSILAC have an increased level of IGF1 and this has been accused of causing certain cancers in people. However, people make there own IGF1 naturally and in fact you would have to consume more than 3,000 quarts of milk a day every day to equal the amount of IGF1 your body naturally produces!!
- There are 9 million dairy cows in the USA which is 30 million LESS than we had 50 years ago. We make more milk now than 50 years ago and most of this is due to the embracing of technological advances in the dairy industry. This has a tremendous positive environmental impact because we can make more milk feeding, housing and disposing of the manure of far fewer cows.
In today’s world of soda pop, fast food, candy and health disorders from poor diets, lets not forget one of natures finest foods MILK!!
MILK DOES A BODY GOOD!!
